Accessibility

What we aim for

We use the WCAG 2.2 guidelines at level AA as our reference, which is the usual standard.

We do not claim full conformance, because we have not verified it with an external audit. What follows is our own review.

What is done

These things are checked and work today:

• Colour contrast: the text-and-background pairs of the design system are listed in an automated contrast test that is part of the checks run before every release. It does not cover every imaginable combination, but it does cover the ones the site uses, and it grows whenever a gap is found.
• Text size: body text runs from 17 to 19 pixels, larger than usual. Lines are kept short so the eye does not lose its place at the end of a line.
• Zoom: you can enlarge the page in your browser without the layout breaking or content disappearing.
• Keyboard: you can move through the whole site with the tab key, and whatever is selected is always shown with a clear outline.
• Every page starts with a “Skip to content” link that jumps past the menu.
• The mobile menu works without JavaScript: it uses a native browser element, so it cannot get stuck half open if a script fails.
• Motion: if you have “reduce motion” switched on in your operating system, the animations here switch off.
• Images: every one has hand-written alternative text, and purely decorative ones are marked so a screen reader skips them instead of reading them aloud.
• Each page declares its language, so a screen reader pronounces the German version in German and the Spanish one in Spanish.

What is not fixed yet

This is the part almost nobody publishes, and the part that is most use to you:

• Some text links around the site — in the footer and within pages — have a tap area between 24 and 44 pixels: they meet the legal minimum but fall short of the recommended 44, and on a small screen they can be fiddly to hit. The main controls (buttons, phone, email) already reach 44. It is on the list.
• We have not yet tested with a real screen reader (NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver) or with people who have a visual impairment. Until we do, we cannot claim everything works well with those tools.
• Content that opens outside this site — Google Maps, WhatsApp, Facebook — is not ours and we cannot answer for its accessibility.
• The online hearing check requires, by its very nature, being able to hear tones through headphones. There is no way to make it accessible to a deaf person: that is what the assessment in the booth, with a person in front of you, is for.

It helps enormously if you tell us three things: which page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what device or software you were using (phone, computer, screen reader). With that we can reproduce the problem and fix it.

We answer every report. If you have had no reply within a reasonable time, phone us and ask for the person who looks after the website.
